CHIMIREC Poland: building for the future

CHIMIREC Poland, a fast-growing subsidiary

Since setting up in Poland in 2004, the CHIMIREC Group has contributed, through its two sites in Warsaw and Lódz, to the virtuous management of waste from all local industrial sectors (automotive, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, chemicals, construction, etc.). In recent years, the country has strengthened the regulations needed to protect the environment and, like other European countries, has embarked on an energy transition.

In the face of climate change, we urgently need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. This means, first and foremost, drastically limiting our use of fossil fuels, namely coal, oil and gas. This necessary energy transition is leading us to develop renewable energies: solar energy, wind power, hydroelectric power, biomass and geothermal energy.

Decarbonising industry also means replacing fossil fuels with biofuels or Refuse Derived Fuels made from non-hazardous waste (SRF) or hazardous waste (RDF), in compliance with current regulations.

Poland's energy policy

At present, Poland's energy mix is essentially based on fossil fuels, particularly coal. The country's energy policy has also put in place several programmes to support the development of photovoltaic and offshore wind energy.

The market for alternative fuels

To reduce their carbon footprint, cement manufacturers are sourcing alternative fuels to replace fossil fuels. Solid recovered fuel (SRF) is manufactured locally from non-hazardous waste. Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), which has similar calorific properties, is made from hazardous waste. Its use is subject to authorisation.

CHIMIREC Poland on the RDF market

Over several decades, the CHIMIREC Group has acquired expertise recognised by the cement industry in France, in Turkey and Morocco , for the quality of the RDF produced by its processing sites. The Polish team, and in particular the chemist whose skills play a decisive role in the manufacture of RDF, received training at CHIMIREC's Javené site in France, which specialises in the production of this alternative energy fuel.

CHIMIREC Poland  has been authorised to manufacture RDF for 1,200 tonnes a year. As there is no industrial equivalent in Poland to the production method used by the CHIMIREC Group, our Polish subsidiary, which makes RDF on a regular basis, recently launched two one-off RDF refining campaigns and is preparing a third. These productions, carried out with a mobile crusher, were a direct response to the specifications given by the cement customers and gave them complete satisfaction. Depending on local demand, CHIMIREC Poland is ready to expand its RDF production and refining capacity.
